Chilean national parks featured in Netflix documentary series narrated by Obama
'Our Greatest National Parks' is the name of the five-episode production that invites viewers to celebrate and discover our planet's most powerful national parks and wild places.
Traveling from the waters of California’s Monterey Bay to the bright red lands of Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, to the vastness of the Patagonian steppe in Patagonia National Park in the Aysén region, the docuseries ‘Our Greatest National Parks’ is an invitation to connect with the wonders of wildlife around the world.
This optimistic and humored production tells the story of different national parks from five continents through the lives of their wildest inhabitants – both large and incredibly small – and explores our changing relationship with nature. Guanacos, the emblematic species of Patagonia National Park, are one of the protagonists of the second chapter, which was filmed in southern Chile.
During the past year, the production team spent several weeks getting to know the dynamics of wildlife in this protected area and recording different sequences with the support of Fundación Rewilding Chile’s team of professionals and wildlife rangers. In this National Park, the organization heir to the Tompkins Conservation legacy develops its Wildlife Program, which seeks to strengthen the populations of different endangered species in Patagonia. “The series is a recognition of the natural value of Patagonia National Park and the different species that inhabit it. The fact that today we can see an abundant population of peaceful guanacos is the result of years of Rewilding, or ecological restoration, our strategy to help this place’s ecosystems bounce back after decades of degradation caused by cattle ranching,” said Cristián Saucedo, Wildlife Program Director of Fundación Rewilding Chile.
One of the executive producers of the series is former President Barack Obama, renowned for protecting more public lands and waters than any other U.S. president in history. He is also in charge of narrating the different moments that bring this story to life.
"To have different protected areas in Chile highlighted in a series with global reach is truly a reason for the country to be proud. In addition to inspiring us with the beauty and biodiversity of our national parks, this is also an urgent call to protect them, especially now that we face the climate crisis and species extinction," explained Carolina Morgado, executive director of Fundación Rewilding Chile.
Our Great National Parks, produced by Wild Space in association with Higher Ground Productions and Freeborne Media, is available on Netflix and features five episodes of 60 minutes each. More information is on the official Netflix website.
